Former Miami Dolphins Safety DeShon Elliott Takes Fire on His Former Team

DeShon Elliott, who is less than a year away from playing for the Miami Dolphins, did not hold back in his comments about his former team.

Appearing on the Punchline Pod with former teammate and Baltimore Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey, Elliott, the son of onetime Dolphins running back Bobby Humphrey, called the 2023 Dolphins “soft” and the Dolphins will never win big.

Elliott is in his first season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and this weekend they will face the Ravens, the team where Elliott started his NFL career in 2020-22 before spending one season in Detroit before joining the Dolphins last season.

“I didn’t get to play the way I wanted to against Baltimore because I played on a soft team last year… oh my God, I can’t put that out there, That was pretty soft. There were some guys that were tough, but like the majority of the team, there weren’t mentally tough individuals. So, Going on a team of mentally tough guys against another mentally tough team, and the AFC North ball is going to be a lot of fun, man.”

Ah!

The Dolphins, of course, lost in last season’s Week 17 game in Baltimore, a matchup of two teams battling for the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs.

Judging by another Elliott comment, he wasn’t surprised the Dolphins limped to the finish line after starting 11-4.

Elliott suggested it’s easier to focus on football in cities like Baltimore and Detroit.

“Miami, this is a distraction,” Elliott said. “I would say we didn’t hang out as much as a team anyway because there’s so much to do in Miami, so the guys were spread out a lot and everyone thought they were important because of the ‘oh, I’m who I am’ mentality. I might be someone different in Miami, you know? Then we went to that city and I felt like we were a really good team. Then the injury bug hit us and then we played the Titans and we lost to Tennessee. He started going to strip clubs.

“You could say the reason Miami will never be good is because of the Miami culture. Just like Miami will never be a good football team. I don’t care. They’ll never be good because of the Miami culture. I think they’re great players. The culture won’t be there. I don’t care what anyone says.”

If you think Elliott hates everything about Miami, that’s not true.

“I love the culture there of loving aesthetic points,” he said. “It was nice to be able to see the sun every day. Honestly, the people. Come on, the people out there are amazing.”

Elliott left the Dolphins as quickly as he arrived via free agency after only signing a one-year contract in 2023, and it’s fair to wonder if the Dolphins should have made a better effort to re-sign him.

The Dolphins have had an inconsistent safety play so far this season, with injuries slowing Jevon Holland down as well as the age factor.

Elliott has started all nine games for the AFC North-leading Steelers and leads the team with 64 points to go along with three tackles for loss, one interception, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

Word coming out of Pittsburgh is that he’s as good as anyone on the Steelers defense not named TJ Watt.
