Massive wildfire on NJ-NY border is 30% contained, has not spread

A. Massive wildfire burns on the New Jersey-New York border The area remained the same size overnight (2,283 acres on the New Jersey side) and was still 30% contained, officials said Wednesday morning.

As firefighters continue to work to gain the upper hand against the wildfire, the National Weather Service issued a warning Wednesday that the risk of the fire spreading is high.

Forecasters say wind gusts of 10 mph in Passaic County could gust up to 20 mph in the morning and decrease in the afternoon. Humidity will be very low, around 25%, which will help the fire spread.

The New Jersey Forest Fire Service has responded to 537 fires since the beginning of October, Gov. Phil Murphy said Wednesday; This number is 500 more than in the same period last year.

It was not immediately clear how many acres were burned on the Orange County, New York, side of the fire.

There were no other changes Wednesday morning from the Tuesday evening update.

Two homes in West Milford and eight structures in the county’s Long Pond Ironworks Historic District remain threatened.

Beech Road remains closed, as does East Shore Road between Awosting Road and the Greenwood Lake Turnpike.

Additionally, all trails in Long Pond Ironworks State Park, Tranquility Ridge, and the Ringwood Mansion section of Ringwood State Park are closed.

Fire officials will hold a press conference at noon to provide additional information.
