Is Kingda Ka Closing? Six Flags Says ‘Announcement’ Coming Soon

JACKSON TOWNSHIP, NJ — Six Flags Great Adventure’s record-breaking roller coaster Kingda Ka is at the center of speculation following unconfirmed reports that the popular coaster may be closing. Fans of the iconic attraction, which holds the title of the world’s tallest coaster, have debated the future of the ride on social media after recent closures for maintenance sparked rumors of a permanent closure.

So what’s going on?

“We plan to share information about the ride and additional park news very soon,” a spokesperson for Six Flags said this week. “We will be sure to keep you updated when this information becomes available.”

While it’s unlikely that the company will completely rip out the ride and turret that Zumanjaro: Drop of Doom has in common with Kindga Ka as we know it today, it can be done.

Opened in 2005, Kingda Ka is the world’s tallest roller coaster at 456 feet and has a launch speed of 128 miles per hour, making it the second fastest coaster in the world. The ride’s intense acceleration and soaring height have made it a major attraction at the New Jersey theme park for nearly two decades. A possible closure would mark the end of an era for thrill seekers who see this as a must-have experience.

The rumors started after the vehicle was down for a long time due to maintenance in recent months. Although Six Flags has not made an official announcement, some enthusiasts think that this frequent shutdown may indicate that the game will be phased out. Fans noted that outdated attractions with high operating costs and complex maintenance needs are sometimes retired in favor of new developments, especially at a time when theme parks are trying to offer modern, energy-efficient rides.

Amid the speculation, some fans called for Six Flags to clarify Kingda Ka’s status, asking in one up-and-down forum, “Is Kingda Ka done for good, or is this just another temporary closure?” he asked the question. Six Flags had previously remained tight-lipped about ride availability changes until official announcements, and the park had given no indication that Kingda Ka was ready to officially close.

Six Flags Great Adventure has invested in several new attractions in recent years, including the Jersey Devil Coaster, opening in 2021. While the park’s management prioritized new developments, it also continued to organize classic excursions. However, roller coaster enthusiasts noted that Kingda Ka’s hydraulic launch system was complex and expensive to maintain, which could affect a possible closure decision.

For now, Kingda Ka remains part of Six Flags Great Adventure’s official ride roster and has no confirmed retirement plans. In the absence of an official announcement, fans remain hopeful that the soaring train will continue to roll and provide adrenaline-pumping thrills for years to come.
