Detroit Red Wings’ Ville Husso likely to be demoted as Alex Lyon moves closer

Alex Lyon is closing in on a comeback and that could mean another trip to Ville Husso’s minors.

Lyon is back on the ice Detroit Red Wings’ He started training on Tuesday after missing several days due to a lower-body injury suffered during training in Toronto on Nov. 7.

“I had a little hiccup there,” Lyon said. “I feel better now. My body is ready and I’m eager to get started.”

Coach Derek Lalonde said Cam Talbot will start Wednesday’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins and Husso will be the backup.

Wings recalled Husso, a minor, under emergency conditions last week Because with Lyon’s injury, only Talbot remained. Husso was waived in the first week of the season after scoring 4 goals on 14 shots in 25 minutes in the season opener. Husso had a 4.94 GAA and a .811 save percentage in two games in Saturday’s 4-0 loss to the New York Rangers.

Once Lyon is cleared, the Wings will have to either lift Husso’s emergency tag or send him back to the Grand Rapids Griffins. It looks like they’re planning to do the latter.

Lyon and Husso will both travel on the “front end” of the trip, Lalonde said. “We will re-evaluate Alex’s health after Pittsburgh.”

The Wings have enough cap space to keep Husso, but Lalonde is a big deal compared to how good Lyon (2.78 goals-against average, .916 save percentage in six games) and Talbot (2.40 GAA, .926 save percentage in eight games) He pointed out that he was playing.

“Cam and even Alex were playing at a pretty high, consistent level,” Lalonde said. “So ideally we would like to have Alex back.

“We’re talking about a season with some waves, some ups and downs, some ups and downs; look no further than a two-game winning streak, we beat Chicago and we’re feeling pretty good. Then we get two losses in a row. But the only consistency in all of this is probably “It was about us scoring.”

Lyon is expected to return by the end of the week, with the Wings about to begin a three-game series in four days (at the Anaheim Ducks on Friday and the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday).

“You just want to be safe and careful and take the right steps and make sure everything is OK,” Lyon said. “But now I’m ready and I felt really good in training. I’m looking forward to getting back in the net again.”
