Ashtanga yoga teacher Sharath Jois, who brought the yoga style founded by his grandfather to the global stage, passed away in the USA at the age of 53.

He was the grandson of Krishna Pattabhi Jois.

His death was confirmed by his sister Sharmila Mahesh and John Bultman, director of the University of Virginia yoga program. He suffered a heart attack while hiking near the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.

Approximately 50 students were accompanying Jois to Humpback Rocks when the incident occurred. He reportedly became tired and sat on a bench before collapsing. The students tried to revive him by performing heart massage, but it was determined that the person died when emergency response teams arrived.
