2 people injured in attack in Phoenix; Suspect arrested after I-10 impasse: police

A suspect has been taken into custody after two people were injured in a double shooting in Phoenix early Friday morning.

Phoenix Police said officers responded to reports of a shooting around 1:40 a.m. on Nov. 8. 43rd Street and McDowell Road.

“When officers arrived, they found two victims suffering from gunshot wounds,” reads part of a Phoenix Police statement. “Two people were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.”

Police said the suspect, identified as 28-year-old Luis Lopez Gutierrez, left before officers arrived on the scene, but police found the suspect’s car shortly after the investigation began.

Here’s part of the statement from Phoenix Police: “Lopez fled from officers and was followed southbound on I-10. Arizona Department of Public Safety officers conducted a traffic stop and Lopez refused to stop.”

The victims fled the scene and were located by officers near 29th Street and McDowell Road.

Police said the suspect was eventually taken into custody near Marana. The suspect, who was first taken to the hospital due to the injuries he received during the incident, was later released and taken back to Phoenix.

Gutierrez was jailed and charged with multiple charges, including aggravated assault, disorderly conduct, trespassing and weapons misconduct.

I-10 was closed in both directions but later reopened.

The shooting suspect fled to Tucson after a standoff on I-10, where he was taken into custody.
