Sammy still confident of winning the series

CASTRIES, St Lucia (CMC) – Despite being thoroughly outplayed by England in the first two T20 Internationals, West Indies’ white-ball Head Coach Daren Sammy says they have the manpower to pull off a comeback victory in the last three matches.

England lead the best-of-five series 2-0 after registering impressive eight-wicket and seven-wicket victories over the Windies respectively at the Kensington Oval on Saturday and Sunday.

This means the West Indies must win the remaining three matches; the first of which will be played at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground in St Lucia on Thursday.

When asked if the West Indies have the talent to pull off this mammoth task, Sammy said he fully believes they can do it.

“Absolutely, especially here in St Lucia,” he said. “Yes, England played better cricket than us in the first two games but I convinced St Lucia to be the extra 12th man we needed here.

“The boys haven’t played the style of cricket that has allowed us to win and that is something we will address, but we have the manpower in the dressing room to win on Thursday and take it one game at a time.” .”

West Indies will have to make do without the services of explosive all-rounder Andre Russell, who is ruled out of the series due to an ankle injury suffered in the opening T20I on Saturday.

However, they will retain the services of leading fast bowler Alzarri Joseph, who was brought into the squad after serving a two-match suspension.

While Sammy acknowledged Russell’s absence would be a huge loss, he said his replacement, Shamar Springer, has the tools to get the job done.

“It’s always a coup to replace someone so experienced like Andre Russell, he brings two advantages in bowling and batting and also in fielding, so it’s always difficult to replace him,” Sammy said.

“In his place in Sri Lanka we have debutant Shamar Springer, an exciting young prospect.

“Shamar (Joseph) is going and preparing for the Test series and obviously Alzarri Joseph is back from his suspension and we are looking forward to welcoming him and the experience he brings to this team.

“Yes, we lost two important guys, but we have two guys who are capable of doing the job for the team,” the head coach added.
