What you need to know

  • Examining a “test version” of a Google Home app highlighted several strings that hinted at CO/smoke detector support.

  • It gives users various code detail alerts about hazardous air quality and sensor tests in their home.

  • More devices have been added to Google Home since Matter support arrived, but the Nest app has been the only way to control CO/smoke sensors.

Google may have plans to add new sensors that protect users from hazardous weather conditions at home.

Google is reportedly developing new sensor support for its Home app, according to a detailed review by AssembleDebug (Android Authority). According to the tip, various strings in the “test version” of Google Home indicate that the app will implement support for CO (carbon monoxide) and smoke detectors.

It is reported that a series of new alerts sent to the user’s phone will also be added to this support. The code displayed warning signs notifying users if “smoke levels were too high.” Additional alerts were discovered informing users of dangerous CO and smoke levels detected by the sensor and informing them to get out of the house into “fresh air.”

The Home app will apparently allow users to test their sensors to make sure their functionality is good.

More importantly, the post notes the existence of smoke and CO sensors created by Google under the name “Nest”. But with them, consumers can only use their functions through the Nest app. It is speculated that the app’s secret code could be indicative of the upcoming integration between the Nest app and Google Home. If true, this would eliminate the need for the additional app and bring everything under the umbrella of the Home app.

Consumers are undoubtedly familiar with the term “Thread”, the new industry connectivity standard for connecting smart home devices. Google jumped on the Matter train in 2022 with the Home app. support emerged For Home Mini, Hub Max, Wifi Pro and Nest Audio. The company later expanded support for more smart home devices and brands.

Although it is not specifically stated that these air quality sensors will be included in the Matter standard, it is possible. Item 1.2 upgrade CSA includes smoke and CO detector support as it specializes in reducing the amount of app “hubs” consumers need to control their devices. Google likely to potentially include smoke and CO sensors inside Rather than a separate Nest app, the Home app will continue this “central hub” idea.

Unfortunately, without more concrete evidence, it’s unclear if/when Google will roll this out. The post wonders if the company has plans for a “future Nest Protection” for this support, but that’s just speculation for now.
