Fundraiser for Bills players’ wives and girlfriends through flag football game

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — On Tuesday, wives and girlfriends of Buffalo Bills players took to the field for the Bills Family Flag Football Challenge to raise money for Haven House.

“I reached out to my community in Hamburg and they recommended Haven House because of the important work they do for our community members,” said Alexis Jones, wife of DaQuan Jones #92 in Bills.

Haven House is an organization that provides safety, resources and shelter to survivors of domestic violence.

Statistics show that almost everyone knows someone who has experienced domestic violence.

“One in four women, one in nine men and one in three young women aged 18 to 24 will have experienced some form of dating or relationship violence in their lifetime. Haven House is the only confidential domestic violence shelter in the county, and we also serve approximately 300 families, individuals, and children each year,” said Haven House Director of Victim Services Tiffany Pavone.

The fundraiser raised more than $13,000, which will help the organization provide basic needs and care to families.

Pavone told 7 News that although the rate of domestic violence remains high, she hopes that means resources are available to help survivors.

“I like to think that abuse is happening more frequently, but the resources are going there and people feel safe enough to reach out to get the help they deserve,” Pavone said.

Jones and Alexis Lewis were just two of 20 wives and girlfriends coached by players like Dawson Knox and Tyler Bass over the past few weeks.

“I love making others feel happy, loved, seen and valued, and that’s why it’s awesome to get out there and play for a good cause,” said Lewis, wife of Cam Lewis #39.
