Portland company works to prevent birds from flying into building

PORTLAND (WGME) — A Portland company says its change to protect birds is working.

The Maine Employers’ Mutual Insurance Company’s building on Commercial Street installed stickers on parts of its six-story building after being approached by Maine Audubon.

Audubon told them that birds were flying toward windows at a higher rate than elsewhere.

A member of Audubon says he’s glad to see some places joining the effort, and says there are a variety of ways people can secure their own windows.

“There are so many solutions people can use to make their windows safe, everything from fly screens to curtains to stickers that we use on our windows throughout the summer,” said Nick Lund, Maine Audubon Advocacy and Outreach Manager. “The only thing birds need to know is that they don’t fly into the sky; there is a window there and they must fly somewhere else.”

Other places in the state that use the stickers are L.L. Bean in the freeport and Audubon’s farm in Falmouth.
