Injuries force changes for Wallabies against Wales, with winger Dylan Pietsch returning home with a calf injury

The Wallabies are required to make at least two forced squad changes after winger Dylan Pietsch was forced to withdraw from the European grand slam spring tour with a calf injury.

Pietsch returns to Australia after being injured in the Wallabies’ 42-37 tour-opening victory over England at Twickenham on Sunday morning.

The Western Force recruit’s disappointment is cause for joy for Queensland Reds and Australia XV vice-captain Josh Flook, who will join the squad after a 10-10 draw with Bristol at the weekend.

“Dylan Pietsch injured his calf against England and will return to Australia to begin his recovery,” the Wallabies said in a statement on social media.

“Josh Flook will join the squad in Cardiff.”

Coach Joe Schmidt will need to make changes to the back row and backline, with captain Harry Wilson also out of Monday’s clash with Wales due to concussion protocols.

Pietsch’s departure will likely mean the promotion of Max Jorgensen, the last-gasp match winner against England, with Samu Kerevi, Harry Potter and Flook all fighting to join the bench.

Master Kerevi would make his first appearance since last year’s ill-fated World Cup, while London-born Potter would become the 18th player to make his debut under Schmidt.

Langi Gleeson looks set to replace Wilson at number eight after starting on the bench at Twickenham.

But Schmidt also has the option of moving dual John Eales Medalist Rob Valetini to the back of the attack, Jeremy Williams from second to sixth, and calling up 2023 World Cup captain Will Skelton or Lukhan Salakaia-Loto to start at lock . .

Wales need to continue their 10-match winless run to keep alive the Wallabies’ hopes of a first grand slam victory in the British Isles since 1984.
