Amazon Shuts Down Freevee Streaming Service

Amazon’s free ad-supported streaming service Freevee is shutting down.

Sources tell Hollywood Reporter It was stated that Amazon plans to incorporate the platform into Prime Video and Freevee executives are expected to be integrated into various departments within the company. Freevee’s shows will still be available for free to users who don’t subscribe to Prime Video (included with an Amazon Prime membership).

“We have decided to phase out the Freevee branding to provide customers with a simpler viewing experience,” an Amazon spokesperson said in a statement. “There will be no change to the content available to Prime members, with select originals from Amazon MGM Studios, a variety of licensed movies and series, and a vast library of FAST channels all available on Prime Video.”

Freevee began its existence as IMDb TV and Changed name in April 2022 to better distinguish it from its relationship with the online database, which is also owned by Amazon. The platform’s demise comes nearly 10 months after Prime Video launched an advertising layer (which is the default for users) in late January, it was previously an ad-free SVOD platform. Prime Video users now have to pay an additional $3 per month to go ad-free.

The launch of Prime Video’s advertising product and the availability of Freevee programs on Prime may have made Freevee redundant.

Amazon is already showing Freevee originals, including Big Bang, to Prime Video subscribers Jury Duty And Bosch: Old. With Freevee, content also flows in the other direction flow 100+ Amazon originals including A League of Their Own And Wheel of Time.
