Dog saved from chronic disease thanks to Shania Twain

A dog who developed a chronic cough after inhaling weed was rescued after his owners realized he wasn’t ‘singing’ to Shania Twain.

Five-year-old Border Collie Jax is the country star’s ‘Man!’ He loves to howl to his hits including. ‘I Feel Like a Woman’ and ‘This Doesn’t Affect Me Much.’

When the musical dog suddenly lost his bark and started coughing, owner Ellana Farrow knew something was wrong.

She took him to Northwest Veterinary Specialists (NWVS), owned by Linnaeus, in Sutton Weaver, Cheshire.

A CT scan revealed that he had inhaled a 5cm long grass seed embedded in his lungs.

Veterinarians performed a bronchoscopy using a small camera at the end of the tube to remove the grass inside Jax.

Ellena, from Preston, Lancs, suspected Jax was feeling bad when he stopped ‘singing’ to Shania Twain.

She said: “At the beginning of August, Jax suddenly started coughing a lot for no apparent reason.

“I thought it might just be a virus, but when it didn’t get better after a few weeks I went to our local vet.”

Ellena, a respiratory physiotherapist, says her professional background scares her the most.

She said: “Vets treated him for potential lungworm but when Jax still had symptoms weeks later I worried it might be something worse.

“He was referred to NWVS and when the CT scan confirmed the problem was probably grass seed or something similar I wasn’t too worried, in fact I was a bit relieved.

“Still, I was shocked by the size of the grass seed. It was 5cm long and looked more like the full seed head of a tall grass.

“Jax is back to his normal self and is running and chasing frisbees with me like nothing happened. The best is singing again.

“I have a camera in the living room to check if I’m out for a while, and when I check on it I’ll often catch her singing on the radio.

“She hadn’t done that in a long time, but not long after her vet treatment, while we were both relaxing in the living room, Shania Twain came over and decided to sing.”

Vet Chantal Rosa said: “Luckily no surgery was required because we were able to withdraw the problematic seed by performing a bronchoscopy, in which a thin, flexible tube containing a camera, light source and miniature instruments is fed through the airways into the lungs.

“This allowed us to locate the grass seed and secure it safely before carefully retrieving it.

“The seed was quite large, measuring 5cm, so no wonder Jax was coughing so much because it would have been a huge irritation for him.

“The whole procedure went very well and Jax recovered quickly.

“He was allowed to return home the same day and is doing well and his cough has completely resolved.”
