Homeless camp bans strain on nonprofit’s resources

Homeless camps are no longer legal, but the homeless population still roams around Elsewhere.

“A lot of them come here when they get bored, and no matter what, Some Other Place will fill that need,” says Some Other Place Executive Director Christopher Robertson.

After the free lunch ends, the dining hall empties at 12:45, but the situation is different at meal time.

“It’s clean and everything is very structured and the quality of service is still really good, but we’re definitely running into additional expense,” Robertson says.

The influx of people in need creates a challenge, but Robertson doesn’t let that stop him from helping.

“I’m going to meet the need at any cost, and I think the only thought in my mind right now with the no camping regulations is that there’s a greater need to be met than we’ve met before,” Robertson says.

At least 4 yellow signs have appeared in the area near Some Other Place in the last few days, prohibiting obstruction of the right of way and storing personal items.

“It’s really more about how do we make sure that regardless of what’s going on, people, people can get food, everyone can get clean, shower, do their laundry, get fed,” Robertson says.

Robertson also hopes that other nonprofits can come together with Some Other Place to make all their efforts a united front to help those in need.
