Güney school counselor received an award

Dee Bednar, a school counselor at Southern, recently received the Professional Commitment Award at the Nebraska Counseling Association’s fall conference.

Bednar started working as a counselor at Southern Schools about 25 years ago on a Safe Schools grant. He works in the kindergarten and primary school building.

“I’m very honored,” he said. “I was shocked when I received the award. “There are so many valuable advisors.”

Bednar also sponsors the Southern Raiders Against Alcohol and Drugs, his high school drug-free group. She works in small groups with individual students in the classroom and in the primary school. She also offers mental health counseling as a licensed provider.

“My favorite part of my job is seeing children and watching them grow and mature. I love seeing them smiling. “This is the best,” he said.

Bednar said she has been working with small groups in class lately and talking about gratitude.

“I tell them that seeing them is what I am most grateful for. “It’s incredible to see how they get by,” he said.

Bednar graduated from South High School. He stated that he was the first person in his family to go to university.

“I always wanted to go to college and do something important with kids. “I was lucky enough to be able to do that in the community I grew up in,” he said.

He said that his wife and three sons have always been his supporters.

“My sons went to the South, so I got to make my career with them. “Now one of my sons is a teacher in the South, and there are many people in my family who are involved in academics,” he said.

Bednar said many things have changed in academics in the last 25 years. He said the school is trying to work more on positive behavior, social and life skills and anger management.

“Our staff are really great at identifying children’s needs and meeting those needs. Everyone works as a team. “I think this is important,” he said.

She said her favorite part of the school year is working with Red Ribbon Week, which takes place in October. In the South, the RAAD group is included in activities in the primary school.

Principal Kane Hookstra recommended Bednar for the award suggested by the foster grandparents. A few years ago, Bednar helped his family attend Güney Elementary School.

Hookstra said Bednar consistently demonstrates an unwavering commitment to the well-being and development of our students and provides invaluable guidance, support and care.

“As a school counselor, Ms. Bednar has proven herself to be a compassionate and empathetic professional who goes above and beyond for each student,” he said. “Whether it is working with individual students through personal or academic challenges, guiding small groups through social and emotional learning activities, or supporting families through difficult times, their impact is deep and far-reaching. “His ability to connect with students, build trust, and create a safe environment for open communication is truly remarkable.”

Bednar said if she’s talking to a student considering a career in school counseling, she’ll tell them it’s a tough job.

“There are so many ups and downs,” he said. “This is hard work and you have to be determined. It is very rewarding to see the children and families you work with. “I wouldn’t change a thing.”
