Former Washington Command Coach Resigns Following Arrest and Car Crash

Old Washington Commanders Defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio resigned from his position on the Wisconsin Badgers coaching staff after he was arrested near campus last week for drunken driving.

A 61-year-old man was arrested Friday morning in Madison, Wisconsin, after a vehicle he was driving crashed into a street sign and broke through a fence before coming to a stop in a yard. ESPN reportedciting an incident report.

Police said Del Rio “showed signs of impairment” and admitted he was behind the wheel, according to the report. He was first arrested during an OWI and was released from police custody.

Del Rio joined the Wisconsin Badgers staff in August as a senior advisor to head coach Luke Fickell.

“I am grateful to coach Fickell and the University of Wisconsin for the opportunity to work with such a talented coaching and support staff and some of the best young football players in the country,” Del Rio said in a statement Monday. he said. “I have decided to step away from my position in the team so they can focus all their attention on the rest of the season.”

Luke Fickell opened Monday’s press conference with a statement about the situation.

“He’s going to move forward and resign and move on,” Fickell said. “It’s a difficult situation. Decisions for which we must all take full responsibility. That’s what Jack will do, and we’ll keep moving forward.”

Del Rio, 61, came to Wisconsin after spending the last four years in Washington. Commanders The defensive coordinator was fired 12 games into the 2023 season.
