In China, a driver crashed his car into a crowd, killing 35 people. Police say driver was upset about divorce

A man who authorities said was upset over a divorce settlement crashed his car into a crowd exercising at a sports complex in southern China, killing 35 people and seriously injuring dozens more, police said Tuesday.

Police detained the 62-year-old man, who was being treated for injuries thought to be self-inflicted, shortly after the attack in the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai on Monday night. The city hosts the People’s Liberation Army’s annual aviation exhibition, which opened on Tuesday, and searches for what it is for users behind China’s Great Firewall are heavily censored.

However, beyond the controls, videos circulated on the social media platform X. Dozens of people were seen lying on the track at the sports complex, which hundreds of residents regularly use to run, play football or dance.

“My foot is broken,” a woman says in one of the images shared by news blogger and dissident Li Ying. The same video showed a firefighter performing CPR on a person while others were told to leave. Known as Teacher Li on X, Li publishes daily news based on user notifications

Police said that in addition to the 35 people killed, 43 people were injured.

China has witnessed a series of attacks in which suspects randomly target the public.

A man who allegedly attacked children with a knife at a school in Beijing in October was detained. Five people were injured. In September, three people died and 15 people were injured in a knife attack at a supermarket in Shanghai. Police said at the time that the suspect had personal financial disputes and came to Shanghai to “vent his anger.”

In May, two people died and 21 people were injured in a knife attack on a hospital in Yunnan province.

Police identified the man detained in Monday’s attack only by the surname Fan, as is customary, and said the man was unconscious and receiving medical care after he was found injured and with a knife in his car.

According to preliminary investigation, she was unhappy with the division of financial assets in her divorce, police said.

Chinese authorities appear to be tightly controlling information about the incident. Internet censors tend to take extra care in sanitizing social media before and during major events such as an aviation expo or the annual meeting of the National People’s Congress.

Although almost 24 hours had passed since the attack, it was not clear what the number of dead or injured was. On Tuesday morning, a search for the sports center on Chinese social media platform Weibo turned up only a few posts; only a few posts referenced the fact that something happened without pictures or details. Chinese media articles about the incident were removed Monday night.

In a statement on Tuesday evening, Chinese leader Xi Jinping called for the perpetrator to be punished “strictly” according to the law.

He also called on all local governments to “strengthen the prevention and control of risks at the source, strictly prevent the occurrence of extreme cases, and resolve conflicts and disputes in a timely manner,” according to the official Xinhua news agency.
