An 89-year-old young man who disappeared from an assisted living center was found dead in a pond

ATLANTA (WANF/Gray News) – An 89-year-old woman was found dead after disappearing from an assisted living and memory care facility in Georgia.

Police said Patricia Miele was last seen by an employee at the Greenwood Place Assisted Living and Memory Care facility around 11 p.m. Friday.

The facility reported her missing around 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

Park visitors found Miele’s body floating in a pond at Kennesaw Memorial Park, about a half-mile from the assisted living facility, on Monday, police said.

“There are no cameras in the facility where he stays. Therefore, we had no physical evidence that he left the facility other than he was missing,” said Sgt. Chuck McPhilamy with Marietta Police.

Police searched the assisted living facility and surrounding neighborhoods, woods and bodies of water five times over the weekend.

Police had previously stated that Miele was hearing impaired and did not have his glasses with him, adding that he had “recently shown signs of confusion, was new to the facility and may have been disoriented.”

Marietta police said Miele may have walked away from the facility, but the investigation is currently continuing to determine how this happened and whether there was any foul play.

The medical examiner will now perform an autopsy to determine Miele’s cause of death.

“I would like to express our condolences to Ms. Miele’s family and loved ones. We saw our own mothers and grandmothers in Ms. Miele, and we wanted nothing more than to find her safe and return her to you,” said Marietta police Chief David Beam. “Even if this is not the outcome, know that our efforts are genuine, comprehensive, and guided by a servant’s heart. “You will be in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
