A group of students from Dhaka University demanded justice for garment worker Santona, whose body was dumped near Nargis University campus last night (November 11).

The protesters stood in front of the Raju Statue on the DU campus and shouted slogans during the protests such as “The result of the killing of workers, Bangladesh will become Vietnam; We will fight together against the killing of workers.”

During the protests, Dhaka University Department of Linguistics student Nuziya Hasin Rasha said, “Everyone knows that a dead body was found near Nargis University yesterday. Then we might worry. But only when we find out that the body is there.” “We are not students, we have forgotten the issue and this is how workers are constantly oppressed.”

Criticizing the government, he said, “We have not seen any prosecution for extrajudicial killings under this government. If such extrajudicial killings continue, farmers, workers and working class people of this country will no longer support you.”

Retired professor of medicine from Limulla Medical College, Dr. Harun-or-Rashid gave a strong message during the protests and said: “A woman’s body, decapitated and dismembered, has become a terrible headline. Just like the women’s protests in 1990 challenged. I warn the Ershad regime, I warn this government: Women If they stand up, no one can resist their power.”

He also said, “Those who disrespect the workers, remember, it will not last long. During the 1969 movement, workers had taken to the streets. You still do not understand the power of workers and workers.” If you disrespect the power of women, they will make sure you don’t even eat.”

Dhaka University student Jaber Ahmed Jubel said: “Our demand is very simple. We want everyone’s rights to be protected. We want security for everyone, but this is still not achieved. If you look at the past 50 years, the same thing happened. If you look at the last two months, you will see that women are still beaten.”

“We only want the security of the people of this country. Do not oppose the workers. Stand with them. Sheikh Hasina thought she would stay in power until her death, but she was overthrown by the workers. If (the government) goes too far, it will not take long for you to be overthrown too.”
