Alabama authorities are investigating a tragic shooting that killed one person and injured 16 others during Tuskegee University’s 100th graduation celebration early Sunday. Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) reported.

Jaquez Myrick, 25, of Montgomery, Ala., was captured trying to leave the scene with a handgun equipped with a machine gun conversion device, authorities said. Since then federally charged ALEA confirmed in a social media statement that he was in possession of a machine gun.

An 18-year-old non-university student was killed and 12 others suffered gunshot wounds; this required treatment at hospitals in Montgomery and Lee Counties. 4 people were injured in other ways during the incident. According to university officials, many Tuskegee students were among the injured.

The shooting happened around 1:40 a.m. as students and visitors gathered to celebrate the landmark HBCU’s historic homecoming. ALEA’s Bureau of Investigation is leading the ongoing investigation, and authorities quickly secured the campus following the incident.

Following the tragedy, all classes at Tuskegee University were canceled Monday as investigators processed the scene. Grief counselors are provided for students and staff.

Reflecting on the events of the weekend, the university shared: “The university had an extraordinary Homecoming weekend and was tarnished by this incident. Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Standing strong together is also the Tuskegee Trail.”

As the investigation continues, the Tuskegee community is forced to mourn and reflect on the tragedy that overshadowed a historic weekend.
