Topeka man found guilty of first-degree murder after 2023 murder trial

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – A Topeka man was found guilty of first-degree murder last week following a 2023 murder trial.

A Shawnee County jury returned guilty verdicts in District Court case 23CR1834 State v. Jacorey Porter on Friday, Nov. 8.

After a five-day jury trial, the jury found 24-year-old Porter guilty of the following crimes:

  • Count1: Voluntary Manslaughter; Sudden Quarrel or Anger of Passion
  • Count 2: Murder in the First Degree; Inherently dangerous crime
  • Count 4: Criminal Discharge of a Firearm in an Occupied Dwelling, Building or Structure; Resulting in Great Bodily Harm
  • Count 5: Gravely Endangering a Child

On September 28, 2023, Topeka Police Officers responded to the 3700 block of SW Park South Ct. about a shot. When officers arrived on scene, they made contact with Jacorey Porter, who told them he was involved and injured.

Officers detained Porter and moved into the house and saw Jeremy Palmer lying on his back in the hallway. He was later pronounced dead at the scene. Porter was later transported to the hospital for treatment of his injuries and was later taken to the LEC for further questioning.

Porter was held in custody prior to the jury trial and will remain in custody until sentencing on January 8, 2025 at 4 p.m.

Prosecutor Mike Kagay commends Assistant District Attorneys Steve Karrer and Bethany Lee and their trial team for their diligent work in prosecuting this case.

Kagay thanks the Topeka Police Department officers for their dedication and the Shawnee County grand jury for their service.
