From rolling pins to Christmas tree ornaments to the legs of your chairs, wood craftsmen produce and create unique pieces that we use in our daily lives.

This craft, which has been around for centuries, is a woodworking technique in which wood is shaped using a lathe.

Over the years, it has transitioned from a technique used to make functional items to an art form, according to Herman de Vries of the Manitoba Wood Turners Association.

“It has come into its own as an artistic medium; I can say more over the last 50 years,” he said in an interview on CTV Morning Live on Tuesday.

A woodturner himself, de Vries said he started the craft when he had to make a spindle for his grandson’s crib.

Since then he has created numerous pieces, including vases, urns and bowls, from different woods.

For those interested in learning more about woodturning, the Manitoba Woodturners Association is hosting an event where Minnesota’s Paul Hedman will participate in a full-day demo.

“Paul is a unique character,” De Vries said. “It becomes a very, very interesting and unusual piece of wood art.”

It was stated that the event will be held on Saturday.
