Upstate woman charged with shooting that killed teenager and back in court

BELTON, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – The woman accused of a shooting that left a teenager dead is expected back in court Tuesday.

Grace Smith was one of three people charged in the February 2023 death of 14-year-old Elijah Sergent, a ninth-grader at Palmetto High School.

The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office said Sergent’s body was found at a home on Willingham Road in Belton. Sergent was eating a bowl of cereal when a bullet struck him in the neck.

Deputies said Smith was on the run with other suspects for two weeks before the group was arrested in Arkansas.

Smith was charged with murder along with Anthony Howard.

The third suspect has been identified Jacob Long, who was friends with Sergent. He pleaded guilty to shooting Sergent and was sentenced by a judge in August 2024.

Smith is expected to enter a plea around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to court records.
