North Lincolnshire paid over £40k compensation over potholes

A council has paid drivers £42,874 in compensation for damage caused by potholes in the last four years.

North Lincolnshire Council (NLC) paid motorists 57 times for damage caused by potholes on roads maintained by the authority in the 2023/2024 financial year.

Since 2020/2021 the NLC has had a total of 410 pothole-related claims, of which 135 have resulted in payment.

The NLC said it invests £13 million each year in maintaining and improving roads in the area.

according to Local Democracy Reporting ServiceThe NLC is responsible for the maintenance of most roads in its territory, except for motorways, some A-roads and private roads.

A council spokesman said: “1.14 billion vehicle miles were driven on roads in North Lincolnshire in 2023 alone, inevitably damaging road surfaces.

“To combat this wear and tear and make journeys safer and hassle-free for everyone, we invest more than £13 million each year to maintain and improve the road network.

“As well as tackling potholes, this includes major resurfacing programs which many residents are already seeing the benefits of.”
