Ebrahim Rasool returns to Washington as SA ambassador

Rasool previously served as ambassador to the United States from 2010 to 2015 during President Jacob Zuma’s administration.

Barack Obama was in the White House at the time.

His return comes as the United States prepares for a new Republican administration following Donald Trump’s election victory.

Briefing the media on Tuesday, Lamola confirmed President Cyril Ramaphosa made the appointment.

“This decision was not taken lightly but was based on Rasool’s previous experience and strong credentials, which will accelerate its acceptance.

“The president needed to appoint someone who could address the situation in a bipartisan manner, communicate effectively with both Democrats and Republicans, as well as key think tanks and other influential platforms in U.S. foreign policy,” Lamola said.

Rasool is a South African politician, diplomat and activist with a long and distinguished career.

He served as Premier of the Western Cape from 2004 to 2008 and was active in the anti-apartheid movement, with deep ties to the ANC.

He was most recently president of the Development Bank of Southern Africa.

During his previous tenure in Washington, Rasool focused on strengthening U.S.-South Africa relations, supporting South Africa’s interests in trade, investment and climate change.

His new role will be to maintain South Africa’s diplomatic relationship with the United States, advocate for favorable trade terms, and possibly work to expand AGOA benefits for South Africa.
