A weeklong closure of Portage Avenue East to allow for pre-construction traffic signaling work at Portage and Main will begin Tuesday.

According to the City of Winnipeg, the closure will include underground work in preparation for the demolition of concrete barriers and other construction.

Access to the Fairmont Hotel and surrounding grounds will be via Lombard Street. Part of the road will reopen for the Santa Claus Parade on Saturday.

Earlier in the year, CTV News Winnipeg reported that city council voted in favor of reopening Portage and Main.

Major construction at the intersection will begin this month and work is expected to be completed by the end of June.
