Genealogy research at NJ college leads to arrest in 50-year-old unsolved case

An arrest has been made in a 50-year-old Wisconsin murder case, thanks to genealogical researchers at a university in New Jersey.

Jon K. Miller, 84, of Owatonna, Minnesota, was arrested Thursday and charged with murdering the 25-year-old hitchhiker on Feb. 15, 1974, the Wisconsin Dunn County Sheriff’s Office said.

Research conducted by the Center for Investigative Genetic Genealogy at Rampo College of New Jersey in Mahwah helped researchers identify Miller. This is the first time work by the university’s genetic genealogy team has resulted in an arrest.

The victim, Mary K. Schlais, was hitchhiking from her home in Minneapolis to an art exhibit in Chicago. His body was found near the intersection of 408th Avenue and 990th Street in Spring Brook, Wisconsin, authorities said.

No suspects had been identified before last week.

A stocking cap was found next to his body, and the hairs from the cap were kept as evidence. ABC-7 Chicago reported. Years later, those hairs were used to develop a DNA profile, according to the network; Researchers at the university then used forensic genealogy to track the suspect through potential relatives.

Miller is in custody in Minnesota and awaits extradition to Dunn County, Wisconsin.
