Sebastian Inlet’s north pier closed for eight months due to improvement project

Sebastian EntranceThe north pier will likely be closed for most of the year, starting this month, as the district begins necessary repairs. Approximately 50 meters of the pier will be closed to visitors, and the armor stone and pier structure will undergo repairs and improvements that will cost approximately 2.5 million dollars.

Sebastian Inlet District spokesman Ed Garland said repairs would be difficult to make because the area is popular with fishermen.

Damage from recent hurricanes and normal deterioration over time has caused washouts and erosion in the area that must be addressed for the pier to be safe for public access.

“A lot of rocks are missing right now. We knew we had to do this project,” Garland said. “We’re bringing granite from Georgia and steel to support the scaffolding.” These new rocks and steel will strengthen risky areas of the pier, Garland added. Garland predicted that the work would continue until July next year.

In addition to the physical closure of the pier, Garland said a popular webcam used by fishermen and surfers will also likely be out of service during repairs.

“Our biggest draw is our webcam,” Garland said. “We had to remove this because it got caught in the middle of our construction project. We’re looking into a temporary webcam because we know a lot of people rely on that to see conditions before they arrive.”

The Sebastian Inlet District is a special taxing district established by the state more than a century ago to protect the vital inlet between the ocean and the Indian River Lagoon. The district, which covers much of Brevard and Indian River counties, can raise money at a tax rate of $0.1628 per hundred thousand dollars of taxable value of properties within its borders.

In addition to the $2.5 million in funding from the district, Garland said they will also be aggressive in seeking grants to help with the project.
