1 killed in accident on Cipularang toll road – Archipelago

Police continue to update the death toll in a pileup involving 17 vehicles on Monday’s Cipularang toll road in Purwakarta, West Java.

As of Tuesday morning, the total number of victims reached 30, including 25 with minor injuries, four with serious injuries and one death, Tribunnews.com reported Tuesday.

All the victims are currently being treated at Abdul Rojak Hospital in Purwakarta.

West Java Police said the accident was caused by a heavily loaded truck whose brakes failed.

In the video clips spread on social media, it was seen that the truck was traveling at high speed in the right lane and could not stop. The truck carrying cardboard crashed into stopped vehicles.

The accident occurred at around 15.30 at 92.2 kilometers towards Jakarta.

West Java Police chief spokesman Sr. “The brakes failed due to the significant load that caused the truck to collide with the vehicles in front of it,” Comr said. Jules Abraham Abast said in Bandung, as quoted by Antara news agency.

Jules added that about 10 personnel consisting of police officers from the National Police’s Traffic Police Corps, West Java Police’s Highway Patrol and Purwakarta Police’s Traffic Police Unit were deployed to handle the situation.

Meanwhile, state-owned accident insurance company PT Jasa Raharja has guaranteed compensation to the victims.

“The family of the deceased victim will be given compensation of Rp 50 million (US$3,180), while injured victims will be entitled to a maximum of Rp 20 million for medical treatment expenses, which will be paid directly to the hospitals that treated them,” said Jasa Raharja president director Rivan A. Purwantono made a written statement on Monday, as reported by kumparan.com.

Following the incident, Jasa Raharja coordinated with local police and hospitals to process compensation claims.

Separately, the Ministry of Transport said on Monday it would investigate the cause of the crash.

The Ministry’s General Directorate of Land Transport sent a team to the scene of the accident to coordinate with all stakeholders and collect data in handling the accident.
