The estate of late Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia recreated his sound using artificial intelligence in partnership with Eleven Labs. The singer-songwriter’s voice now lets ElevenReader app users read their choice of audiobooks, articles, poems, PDFs and more through what Eleven calls the Iconic Listening Experience, The billboard reported. Garcia’s voice is available in 32 different languages.

This isn’t the first voice to be added to the list of personas available through the AI ​​company’s app; because the company’s repertoire also includes Judy Garland, James Dean, Burt Reynolds and Sir Laurence Olivier. Garcia’s recent vocal replication was made possible through a collaboration between Garcia’s estate and ElevenLabs. The Jerry Garcia Foundation, co-founded by his daughter Keelin Garcia, is also considering Garcia’s voice model for narrative documentaries or audio art exhibitions.

Keelin Garcia said the audio transcription and production was done in an effort to continue her late father’s legacy. “My father was a pioneering artist who embraced innovative audio and video technologies,” Garcia said. He told stories about his father’s passion for digital art, video games and keeping up with new technologies. “Now as the technological landscape expands, ElevenLabs AI Voice technology will offer fans the opportunity to hear and stream a replica of Dad’s voice reading their favorite books and other written content,” Garcia continued.
