An Arizona man is suspected of murder near a bar outside Petaluma

An Arizona man is suspected in the fatal shooting of another man. He was found near a bar on Sunday afternoon just outside Petaluma, investigators announced Monday.

Paul Elliot Coilton, 59, was arrested in San Jose around 4:30 a.m. Monday morning, according to the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office.

Coilton, of Salome, Arizona, was arrested on suspicion of murder, auto theft and being a felon in possession of a gun and ammunition.

He is being held in the Sonoma County jail without bail.

Sonoma County court records did not contain formal charges as of Monday evening, and it was not immediately clear when Coilton was expected to make his first court appearance.

Sonoma County sheriff’s deputies responded to the area of ​​Ernie’s Tin Bar in the 5000 block of Lakeville Highway around 4 p.m. Sunday, dispatchers said at the time.

Ernie’s co-owner Christine Nardone said in an email to The Press Democrat Sunday night that the attack did not take place inside the bar.

He added that the victim was located on Stage Gulch Road, which intersects Lakeville Highway, and had “no known connection to the bar.”

Ernie’s Tin Bar has been a local fixture in the area for over a century.

Details about the attack, including the victim’s name, have not yet been released.
