Lawmakers: Unlicensed driver charged after crash in Canandaigua

CANANDAIGUA, NY — A man is facing charges following a crash in Canandaigua Monday afternoon.

The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office said Jay A. Vandyke was driving on State Route 5 and 20 when he struck another driver, Mark F. Powless, who was stopped at a red light near Hickox Road.

Deputies, the fire department and the Canandaigua Emergency Team responded to the scene. Vandyke was taken to a local hospital for internal injuries and is currently in stable condition.

The other driver, Powless, was not injured.

Deputies say Vandyke was driving without a license and was charged with:

  • Second degree aggravated unlicensed operator
  • The speed is not reasonable and prudent
  • I follow very closely

The crash closed State Routes 5 and 20 between Hopkins Road and Hickox Road for about an hour Monday afternoon.
