BIRMINGHAM, Ala.(WBRC/Gray News) – Police in Alabama are investigating a homicide after a man was found shot to death in a vehicle Monday morning.

Just before 8 a.m., officers were dispatched to a person shot near Gadsden Highway and Parkway East in Birmingham.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man, identified by investigators as 45-year-old Enrique Cortes, slumped inside a pickup truck and shot.

Cortes’ 5-year-old grandson was also in the vehicle, but he was not shot at.

Birmingham police said Cortes died at the scene.

The child was first taken to the police station and then reunited with his family.

According to police, the investigation revealed that the victim was driving on Parkway East when a vehicle pulled up to the truck and shot at him.

Police said Good Samaritans took the child to CVS when they realized what was happening.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said no one was in custody, but a potential vehicle for the suspect was located.

The investigation is still ongoing.
