Drake Maye said North Carolina coach Mac Brown and current Patriots coach Jerod Mayo We have something in common.

And that’s a trait the Patriots’ quarterback appreciates.

“The biggest thing you look for as a player is the player’s coach,” Maye said during an appearance on WEEI’s afternoon show on Monday. “I think they both tick that box.”

maye Even though Brown was older, almost grandfatherly, he was able to learn a lot from his college coach, he said. Brown, 73, who won the national championship in 2005, was the reason Maye went to North Carolina.

The rookie had no choice in Mayo. He was drafted third overall by the Patriots and had to live with that team’s head coach.

maye He appreciates what Mayo brings to the table. He likes that Mayo is a former player and has former Patriots (Dont’a Hightower, Troy Brown) on his roster.

“He did it. He lived it. “Maye had the Patriots experience for Mayo,” he said. “He knows what it’s like to train early in the morning and come back after practice and run on the hills. I think that’s the biggest thing you respect. He did it, he won Super Bowls, and he did it here, in the same building.

“It’s a great experience to bring back a lot of these players that played with him from time to time, the coaches that he played with. “You can respect something like that and gain a lot from it.
