A man has been charged following a fatal stabbing in south London on Sunday morning.

Three injured people were found and Hilkiah McLeggan, 77, of Southwark, was pronounced dead at the scene in East Street, Walworth.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed his identity on Monday and said his family was aware of the situation and had received support from specialist officers.

Ali Musse, 66, of no fixed abode, was charged with one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder, police said.

He will appear at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

It was stated that two other people remained in hospital and one of them was in critical condition.

Ch Supt Seb Adjei-Addoh, who leads the Met’s policing force in Southwark, described the incident as “appalling” and thanked citizens who helped officers at the scene.

“There will be an increased police presence in the Walworth area as we work with our partners to provide reassurance to local people and small businesses operating on East Street,” he added.

“Finally, we know that there are posts on social media implying that this is a terrorist incident. “Our investigations show this is not the case and we ask the public not to speculate.”
