Morgan Rogers earns first Three Lions call-up as eight withdraw from Greece and Ireland

Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers has been called up to the England squad for the first time since eight players withdrew from November’s Nations League matches due to injury.

West Ham forward Jarrod Bowen, Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite, Newcastle defender Tino Livramento and Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford have also been added to interim boss Lee Carsley’s squad.

Arsenal duo Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka, Chelsea duo Levi Colwill and Cole Palmer, Manchester City midfielders Phil Foden and Jack Grealish, Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold and Southampton’s Aaron Ramsdale withdrew.

Rogers was initially part of the under-21 squad but was promoted to the senior squad ahead of Thursday’s match in Greece.

When asked last week about not selecting Rogers in the first round, Carsley said:

“He’s not missing anything, he’s a player I really know, he’s really important for the Under-21s,” Carsley replied. “We experienced this last campaign, sometimes the competition determines how fast you go down the road.

“I have no doubt he will get there. But it is very important for the Under-21 Team to regain that title and Morgan will be a big part of that.”
