Polestar 2 Became Even More Expensive in 2025

  • The only Polestar 2 available for 2025 is the Long Range, Dual-Motor AWD version with Performance Package.
  • It starts at $64,800 before destination fees.
  • The Polestar 2 is made in China and this could be a response to the new tariffs. The company is also shifting its focus to the Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 models.

The Polestar 2 was one of the first electric vehicles to hit the market that truly felt like it could match what Tesla was doing in terms of range, performance, and technology. But Volvo’s corporate cousin Polestar is changing its tactics when it steps into the ring for Round Two as it continues its fight for EV supremacy.

But this could be bad news for anyone holding out until the 2025 model year to buy a Polestar 2. The electric sedan will currently be available in only one trim level and configuration; the most expensive in this series. Like Car and Driver Recently discovered, the only new 2025 Polestar 2 available for order will be the Long Range, Dual Engine version with Performance Package. This means it will start at $64,800 or $66,200 including destination fees.

Unfortunately, it represents a sizeable price increase over the 2024 Polestar 2, with much less flexibility in overall specs. The Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive version of this car is available starting at $51,300; Long Range AWD form is $56,700; or the Long Range AWD Performance Package, which survives intact until 2025. (All prices include destination charges.) Last year Polestar 2 there is a significant subcutaneous upgrade it also switches from front-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive while gaining upgraded engines, batteries and charging speeds. These changes made it even better one of our favorite Tesla alternatives and objectively one of the best sports sedans on the market (electric or otherwise). And while Polestar 2 never achieved this Affordable price levels of Tesla Model 3there was some very attractive rental deals The US is left behind because it doesn’t qualify for the EV tax credit.

While these changes may be disturbing to some fans, they make sense. Polestar 2 is currently produced in China, hence its price seems to reflect new 100% tariffs It is applied to electric vehicles produced in that country. Presumably, these tariffs caused the automaker to cancel all but the most expensive versions of the car because it would have made an absolute bath in anything else. And the Polestar 2’s current pricing could mean the company is just eating into existing tariffs. (We’ve emailed Polestar representatives for comment and will update if we hear back.) Volvo has done something similar again with Chinese made EX30: for now, until this car is produced in Europe, only the more expensive version will be sold in America, and potentially in limited quantities.

It is also clear that Polestar’s strategy has shifted from the 2 to other models. As good as it is, there has always been a sedan in the SUV world, and sales haven’t been great lately; Less than ideal considering the years spent as Polestar’s only model. Instead, Polestar now seems to be emphasizing its future: pole star 3 luxury crossover and upcoming pole star 4 performance coupe crossover.

Both will help Polestar avoid at least some of those pesky anti-China tariff issues. The Polestar 3 is currently produced in South Carolina alongside its new mechanical cousin. Volvo EX90Polestar 4 will be produced in South Korea. Polestar 2’s future seems uncertain, but last we heard, this is It could be completely replaced by a sedan called Polestar 7. Considering how popular sedans are in other markets, including China, it’s unlikely the Polestar will be a pure SUV just for Americans.

The good news is that if you want a Polestar 2 there are outstanding options on the second-hand market right now. You can find plenty of off-lease Polestar 2 sedans for under $35,000 or even $30,000 on Cars.com and other marketplaces (and if my own gas-powered Mazda 3 decides to eat it, I’ll definitely be looking into that ) I direct myself.)

And the 2025 Polestar 2 is a very big car, to say the least; You get 476 horsepower and 546 lb-ft of torque, a maximum range of 254 miles, a zero-to-60 mph time of four seconds, charging speeds of up to 205 kW, and a host of interior options such as Pilot Assist, a panoramic sunroof, and more. heat pump with heated seats and steering wheel, and more. Finally, with an adapterNow it can also use the Tesla Supercharger network.

Is this still a solid deal for the Polestar 2, or would you go for it instead?
