Fishermen were fired upon: Dhaka expressed concerns to Myanmar

Dhaka today conveyed to Myanmar its deep concern over the recent incidents of armed attacks targeting Bangladeshi fishermen and urged it to take measures to prevent such incidents.

According to a press release, the issue was raised when Myanmar Ambassador to Bangladesh U Kyaw Soe Moe called Foreign Minister Md Jashim Uddin at the foreign ministry.

During the meeting, Jashim Uddin conveyed Dhaka’s concerns regarding Myanmar’s increasing internal conflicts, especially in Rakhine State. He emphasized that necessary steps will be taken to prevent the internal conflict in Myanmar from spreading to Bangladesh.

“These incidents have intensified tensions in Bangladeshi border communities and disrupted their daily lives,” he said.

The foreign minister also noted that the conflict in Myanmar is triggering further displacement, noting the recent influx of Rohingya into Bangladesh. Bangladesh currently hosts more than 1.2 million Myanmar citizens.

Evaluating his recent visit to Cox’s Bazar, Jashim Uddin stated that law and order in the Rohingya camps has deteriorated and crimes such as drug trafficking and violent clashes have increased.

Drawing attention to the environmental and economic damage caused by refugees to host communities, he called for the immediate repatriation of the Rohingya, who, in his opinion, are willing to return to Myanmar.

Myanmar’s ambassador agreed on the need for repatriation, acknowledging the importance of finding a solution to the displacement crisis.

The two sides also discussed UNDP’s recent warning of a possible famine in Rakhine, with the foreign minister urging Myanmar to act quickly to prevent further displacement towards Bangladesh.
