Amsterdam police detain pro-Palestinian protesters at banned demonstration

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — Police detained several people who attended a demonstration that was banned after violence broke out in central Amsterdam on Sunday. Targeting fans of an Israeli football clubA local broadcaster reported.

Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema banned all demonstrations over the weekend following horrific scenes on Thursday and Friday in which youths on scooters and on foot attacked Maccabi Tel Aviv fans, in what was widely condemned as an outbreak of violent antisemitism in the Dutch capital.

Before the Ajax match, Maccabi fans also tore down the Palestinian flag from a building in Amsterdam and chanted anti-Arab slogans on their way to the stadium. There were also reports of Maccabi fans starting fights.

Video published on local broadcaster AT5 shows police detaining a person who attended a small demonstration in Dam Square on Sunday. Protesters chanted “Free Palestine”. AT5 reported that approximately 20 people were detained.

Amsterdam City Hall said police in X began arresting demonstrators who refused to leave the square, which is at the heart of the city’s central shopping district and close to the historic canal network.

Organizers of the protest appealed to the court on Sunday morning to allow the demonstration, but the judge upheld the ban imposed by the municipality.

During the hearing, senior Amsterdam police officer Olivier Dutilh said that there were incidents throughout the night targeting people thought to be Jews, some of whom were ordered to get out of taxis and others were asked to show their passports to verify their citizenship.

Police launched a major investigation on Friday after gangs of teenagers carried out what the mayor of Amsterdam called “hit-and-run” attacks on fans, apparently inspired by calls on social media to target Jews. While five people were treated in hospitals, more than 60 suspects were detained.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar He rushed to the Netherlands on Friday and offered Israel assistance in the police investigation. He met with Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof on Saturday and said in a statement that attacks and demands to show passports were “reminiscent of dark periods in history”.
