Borderlands Mexico: Averitt completes major facility expansion in San Antonio

Borderlands is a weekly digest of developments in the world of United States-Mexico cross-border trucking and commerce. This week: Averitt completes major facilities expansion in San Antonio; Bennett Family of Companies opens new facility in Texas; Aerospace manufacturer completes $28 million expansion in Mexico; and Mode Global acquired Jillamy’s freight forwarding division.

Less than truckload carrier Averitt It’s ready to open its new 85,000-square-foot distribution and fulfillment warehouse along I-35 in San Antonio.

In addition to a new distribution and fulfillment warehouse, Averitt expanded its cross-dock truck terminal to 80 gates and added a new maintenance facility.

Construction of the transition from the fuel station on the site will be completed next year.

Ed Habe, vice president of Mexican sales for Averitt in San Antonio, said nearshore work is already driving demand for warehouse and logistics services across Texas, especially in cities located near or along the border.

San Antonio is located on the I-35 corridor, between Laredo and Austin. The city is approximately 260 miles from the Mexican border in Laredo.

“San Antonio has already seen the impact of working nearshore,” Habe told FreightWaves in an interview. “Carrier Global already has a warehouse here. Toyota and Navistar have large manufacturing facilities here, in part because of San Antonio’s proximity to Mexico. They all have Mexican companies or customers in Mexico. Navistar ships cargo across the border to its factory in General Escobedo, Mexico. “San Antonio is part of the I-35 corridor, which is the busiest freight corridor in the United States and extends to Laredo and then into Mexico.”

Averitt is a transportation and logistics provider headquartered in Cookeville, Tennessee. The company has 4,500 tractors and 14,750 trailers in 85 locations across the country. Averitt’s team consists of more than 8,000 employees.

Docking near shore – moving manufacturing and manufacturing operations from one country to another to be closer to end consumers – creating manufacturing growth across Mexico as shippers seek cheaper, more convenient supply chains closer to doing business with the U.S.

Averitt isn’t the only trucking company or transportation provider looking to expand its capacity to grow cross-border traffic between the United States and Mexico.

Some of the latest companies to open or expand new facilities in Texas include Kuehne+Nagel, Ryder System and Maersk. Uber Transportation Laredo recently opened a new office in the Mexican city of Nuevo Laredo, across the Texas border.

Averitt’s San Antonio facility provides services such as truckload and LTL, as well as distribution and dockside container handling services from a nearby Union Pacific railroad.

Averitt first opened its San Antonio location in 2001. When opened, the facility covered approximately 17,000 square meters with 38 loading doors for trucks. Today, Averitt’s San Antonio facility employs approximately 30 truck drivers and 50 employees.

Averitt’s strategy in Texas focuses on the long-term growth of U.S.-Mexico trade and building a network of facilities that can serve the needs of cross-border customers.

Averitt has more than 800,000 square feet of distribution and fulfillment warehouse space throughout Texas, including facilities in Dallas, Houston, Austin, Laredo, El Paso, Harlingen and Del Rio.

The San Antonio expansion also comes on the heels of the company announcing it was opening a new service center in September. Tyler, Texas, A 20,500 square meter facility with 33 dock doors.

“One of our strengths is diversity,” Habe said. “Maybe less than a truckload would be slow, but our dedicated division is busy or storage is busy. Diversification definitely empowers us to not just stick to one type of service. We offer a variety of services primarily throughout Mexico and the United States, but this expansion in San Antonio is exciting. It’s almost three times the size of the one in Laredo. He will definitely be Laredo’s backup. If the warehouse in Laredo is full, we have San Antonio.”

Bennett Family of Companies opens new facility in Texas

Bennett Family of Companies recently expanded with a new location in Dayton, Texas.

The facility includes Bennett On-Site Services, BOSS Heavy Haul and Bennett Motor Express. The location includes a 10,000-square-foot office and 38 acres of gardens.

Aerospace manufacturer completes $28 million expansion in Mexico

ITP Aero recently completed the expansion of its factory in Quetaro, Mexico.

The Querataro facility produces low-pressure turbine static parts and tubes for the aerospace industry. ITP Aero officials said they will launch new product lines from the facility.

The company said the $28 million expansion will create 250 jobs over the next three years. The Querataro facility, which opened in 1998, currently employs 1,000 workers.

Mode Global acquires Jillamy’s freight forwarding division

Mode GlobalAcquired freight brokerage business, a third-party logistics firm Jillamy Inc.is a supply chain and logistics provider and an independent representative of Mode Transport.

The acquisition strengthens Mode Global’s position in the market by integrating Jillamy’s transportation expertise and resources. newsletter.

Mode Global will assume Jillamy’s logistics and transportation management solutions, while Jillamy’s warehousing, packaging and fulfillment services will remain unchanged.

As part of the transaction, Mode Global will gain more than 200 employees and add facilities in Pennsylvania, Arizona, Florida, Texas, Illinois, South Carolina, Maryland and Ontario to its existing national footprint.

Dallas-based Mode Global is the eighth-largest truckload brokerage in the United States and one of the largest non-asset intermodal providers.
