The Philadelphia Eagles (6-2) face the Dallas Cowboys (3-5) on Sunday afternoon, with the game airing on CBS for the first time in more than three decades.

This was the first time the NFC East rivals had faced each other on the network since 1993, when CBS still owned the rights to the NFC package and eventually lost it to Fox. CBS won the game thanks to the NFL’s new TV deals that guaranteed coverage of every NFC team at least once a season.

Surprisingly, the man who called the 1993 Eagles-Cowboys game — Jim Nantz — will be providing the play-by-play in the booth on Sunday. Nantz is in his 40th season calling NFL games for CBS and is in his eighth season, appearing in the booth alongside former Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo.

While CBS was excited to launch the Eagles-Cowboys rivalry game, it wasn’t exactly the matchup they were hoping for. The Eagles have turned a corner in recent weeks, while the Cowboys are limping along on a four-game losing streak. They will also be without quarterback Dak Prescott, who will be away from the team for at least a month. a torn right hamstring. It will be Cooper Rush instead. Three interceptions against Eagles in 26-17 loss in 2022He made his first career start against the Birds (though he won four of the five games he started that season).

What is unclear is the status of quarterback Jalen Hurts, who will play for the Eagles. although probably limited to ankle injury. Head coach Nick Sirianni awkwardly answered a question about Hurts earlier this week, first revealing he was dealing with an ankle injury before being corrected by a member of the team’s public relations team.

Despite not winning in Dallas since 2017 almost everyone is picking an Eagles win on Sunday. That includes The Inquirer’s Birds writers, who think reverse jumper Saquon Barkley will have a field day against the weak Cowboys defense.

“The Cowboys are 3-5 after being picked by many experts to win the NFC East. Dak Prescott won’t play again for over a month. “The defense is as weak as a tea bag used twice,” he said. wrote Inquirer columnist Marcus Hayes.

Here are some interesting stats from Eagles-Cowboys, courtesy of the Associated Press:

  1. The Eagles rank in the top 10 in the NFL in both offense (No. 6) and defense (No. 3). The Cowboys … don’t do that, ranking 14th on offense and 27th on defense. The Cowboys were also minus-seven in terms of turnovers, while the Eagles improved to minus-two.

  2. The Cowboys entered the game on a three-game losing streak; This marked the first time since 2020 that Prescott missed 11 games with a broken ankle.

  3. The Eagles lead the NFL with 12 plays of at least 40 yards. By comparison, the Cowboys had three.

  4. Hurts became the second quarterback since 1970 to throw six touchdown passes in a three-game span. The last time Cam Newton did this was in 2011 with the Carolina Panthers.

  5. The Eagles hope to contain Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, who has thrown 10 touchdown passes in his last 10 home games.

There is no rest for the weary.

After Sunday’s game against the Cowboys, the Eagles will have just a few days to prepare for Jayden Daniels and the top-seeded Washington Commanders in Philly on Thursday night on Amazon’s Prime Video.

The Commanders will host the surprising Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday at 1 p.m., so neither team will have the advantage of rest. The Eagles complained to the league about last season.

NFL schedulers call this the “total rest disparity”; It’s a way to keep track of the amount of time each team needs to rest between games. Last season the Eagles’ total rest differential was minus-6, which was especially evident in the Birds’ games against the Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers; Thursday Night Football games.

Mike North, the NFL’s executive vice president of broadcast planning, told The Inquirer in May. the data is not clear that less rest affects competitive fairness. Regardless, the Eagles’ complaints may have paid off, as the Birds’ total rest differential this season was plus-11. Barring further scheduling changes, the Eagles have just one game left — Week 18 against the New York Giants — to play with less rest than their opponents.
