From Nunavut to the world

With every stroke on the canvas, Shuvinai Ashoona shares a slice of life in Kinngait, Nunavut.

“My art is about how my world turns and where it comes from,” he said.

The 63-year-old has called Kinngait home all his life, but always manages to find new inspiration.

“I see more artists coming and they prefer different art…they come back and forth just like I move back and forth with my art,” he said.

No stranger to international acclaim, his work has been exhibited worldwide. But a new exhibition at the Canadian Cultural Center in Paris still raises a smile.

The collections of the French-Swiss duo Claude Baud and Michel Jacot are exhibited here, as well as previously unseen works by Ashoona.

According to Catherine Bédard, director of the Canadian Cultural Centre, Baud and Jacot became avid collectors of Inuit art for many years after living in Québec. Bédard has partnered with Kinngait’s West Baffin Cooperative for the current exhibition.
