Apartment complex to host candlelight vigil Friday for child killed in police-involved shooting

KANSAS CITY, MO. (KCTV) – Police continue to remain tight-lipped about what happened at Oval Spring Apartments on Thursday. Most of what happened remains unclear. However, two people with knives, a woman and a child, later died. A police officer fired his gun.

“It was a terrible incident. We are incredibly saddened by this situation,” he said. Oval Bahar Apartment property manager Carrie Lufkin on Saturday. “It was terrible. “I saw terrible things that I will never forget.”

“It was just an unfortunate incident,” said Gavin Delaney, assistant manager of the estate, who also witnessed what happened on Thursday. “I don’t think anyone wanted this to happen.”

A memorial service will be held for the deceased child next Friday at Oval Spring Apartments. All citizens were invited to the commemoration ceremony to be held at 19.00. At the commemoration ceremony, candles will be lit and balloons will be released in front of the building where the incident took place.

“It affects everyone. It affects the family; it affects the law enforcement involved. It was absolutely tragic. I can’t imagine being that family,” Lufkin said. “We want to do the right thing and we want everyone to know that we are deeply sorry and we really care about this.”

There will be mental health professionals on site at the complex next week. They will be there to help the apartment community through the emotions of what happened.

“These are their homes. Everybody has their own ways of processing being disrupted by an incident and a tragedy like what happened in your home, and we want to be able to help with that,” Delaney said.

The incident is being classified as an Assault on a Police Officer and is being investigated by the Police Involved Incident Team. Blue Springs police are the lead agency in the investigation. KCTV5 reached out to the department for an update but did not hear back. The officer who fired the gun and two other officers were placed on administrative leave.
