In September, Dowman made history as the youngest player to score a goal in the UEFA Youth League.

Speaking before he left Arsenal’s academy to join Norwich City’s first team coaching staff, Jack Wilshere said of Dowman: ‘There’s always a concern when you’re putting a young player like that on the field in these games, but if you’re good enough you’re old enough. .

‘He could be more consistent but he’s only 14 and hasn’t even started his GCSEs yet.

‘Because of his age we need to find a balance between letting him play and have fun while also trying to give him as much work as we can.’

Declan Rice was not seen in the video feed of Arsenal’s training session on Saturday as he continues to recover from a broken toe.

Asked whether Rice would be available against Chelsea, Arteta said on Friday: ‘I have to be very vague on that because there is no clarity on whether he will be available for the weekend.

‘What I can say is that he hasn’t trained yet and it’s unclear whether he’ll be ready to play.’
