Raising funds, food and awareness for Canadian veterans

A Canadian veterans motorcycle group is calling on Calgarians to come out and help stock a truck’s racks in support of vets on Saturday.

Ypres 3third The Canadian Army Veterans Motorcycle Unit (CAV) is collecting food and cash donations at Sobey’s Royal Oak, located at 8888 Country Hills Boulevard, until 4 p.m.

Donated food will go to the Veterans Association Food Bank, while funds raised will go to the Canadian Heritage Project.

Darrin Walker, membership coordinator, said the event helps support veterans struggling to make ends meet who might be reluctant to visit a regular food bank.

“We have vets who are a proud group,” Walker said, “so you don’t often see them coming off the street and going to the Calgary Food Bank or other resources – along with the Veterans Association Food Bank, they say, ‘They’re really comfortable coming in and getting the help and resources they can get. “

The Canadian Heritage Project is a national, volunteer-run charity that provides free programs to support Canadian veterans’ transition to civilian life. The organization aims to advocate for veterans and educate the public about their needs.

“We’re trying to help every veteran who could use this,” Walker said.
