S Club star Jo O’Meara wrote: ‘So well deserved’, while former Pussycat Dolls star Ashley Roberts added: ‘Yes yes yes!’

At this year’s Brits, Raye took home the first gong presented on the night, Song of the Year for her hit song Escapism ft 070 Shake, and soon after took home the R&B Act gong and Best New Artist awards as well.

He later broke down in tears as he brought his beloved grandmother onto the stage while accepting the Album of the Year, Artist of the Year and Songwriter of the Year awards.

It has been nominated seven times – the most awarded to a single artist in a year – but it probably couldn’t have won any more than it did because it was shortlisted for song of the year twice – with Escapism and Prada winning that title.

‘I’m shaking. I really don’t know what to say right now but… thank you. “I’ve always dreamed of singing this,” Raye said as she took the podium to accept the first award of the night.

The emotional star, a former pupil of the BRIT School in Croydon, who picked up the Best New Artist award moments later, told the crowd: ‘I don’t understand what’s really going on at the moment because I don’t understand!’

Raye’s recent success comes after he parted ways with his former label Polydor and released his critically acclaimed debut album My 21st Century Blues as an independent artist. He referenced his new beginning in his Best New Artist Speech.

‘I have to thank my mum, dad and grandmother who are part of my team. Yes grandma! In a way, I feel like a new artist. ‘I released my first song when I was 15, I released my first mixtape when I was 16, don’t go listen to it because it’s not that good anymore.’

‘But I feel like a new artist, I have to start over. The artist I was three years ago couldn’t believe what he saw today. Now I’m my own boss, I’m in control. Thank you!’
