One person died in an explosion at a house in Southern Jordan

SOUTH JORDAN — One person was found dead following an explosion that set a neighborhood house ablaze Wednesday afternoon.

South Jordan firefighters were called to a house fire near 10500 South and 3200 West around 3 p.m. Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Lessner said the fire was caused by some type of explosion.

While flames and smoke rose from the roof of the building, citizens stood in the cold and watched the incident.

Lessner said resources from all over the county rushed to the scene to help fight the fire. While the house suffered serious damage due to the explosion, two nearby houses also suffered minor damage.

South Jordan authorities said a family member was unaccounted for and after hours of searching, a person was found dead in the home just before 10 p.m.

The person’s name and age were not immediately released.

Adjacent homes were evacuated as a precaution, Lessner said. Investigators in the neighborhood are trying to find out what caused the explosion.
