Many Popes go for $600,000 for half-sister of Grade 1 winner at Keeneland

Mandy Pope’s Whisper Hill Farm added another prospect to its broodmare, reaching $600,000 for the three-year-old filly at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale in Lexington on Friday.

Curlin’s raceless daughter was recruited by agent Claiborne Farm.

Adoptable was bred in Kentucky by Don Alberto Corporation from the prolific stakes-producing Ghostzapper mare American Story, making her a half-sister to Grade 1 winner American Gal, stakes winner Americanize and Grade 3-placed Magic Tap.

“I have (American Girl) part of the family and I’m happy with the colts,” Pope said. “He’s handsome and we’re just trying to keep the family afloat. He could have been in Book 1 or 2, he deserved it.”

Pope purchased American Gal for $3 million at Fasig-Tipton’s November Sale in 2018. Curlin’s first foal, a mare named Weather Delay, sold for $500,000 to Repole Stable at the 2022 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Last year the Into Mischief colt was sold to Grandview Equine for $1.1 million at the Keeneland September sale.

“I am very pleased with the sale,” said Claiborne farm manager Bradley Purcell. “That was a $450,000 yearling (sold at the 2022 Keeneland September Yearling Sale) so we were thinking it could be $250,000 or $300,000.

“He is very pleased with the result and the home he has. He stood out both for his looks and his pedigree. He was in the right place.”

The 255 horses that changed hands on the fourth day of the sale yielded a gross of $18,612,500, with an average price of $72,990 and an average price of $55,000; all from last year’s results. The clearance rate was 81 percent.

The November Sale will continue on Saturday, with the fifth session starting at 10:00 local time (15:00 GMT).
