Zheng Qinwen’s key to beating Coco Gauff at the WTA Finals lies in serving perfectly and eliminating mistakes

A Chinese tennis expert has suggested that Zheng Qinwen needs to improve her concentration, eliminate inconsistencies in her game and take advantage of her magnificent serves if she is to sign off on a career-defining season by winning the WTA Finals.

If Zheng beats American Coco Gauff in Riyadh on Saturday night, she will become the second woman to win the Olympic gold medal and season-ending crown; This was a feat previously achieved only by Serena Williams in 2012.

Zheng sealed her place in the final against Gauff on Friday night at the King Saud University Indoor Arena by defeating Czech tennis star Barbora Krejcikova 6-3, 7-5.

“She needs concentration (if she is to beat Gauff). Another thing is that it relies heavily on the first serve and the first points won,” said Chinese tennis expert Wang Dong. “If he can take care of those two, I think he has a chance, a very good chance.”

In Zheng’s semifinal against Krejcikova, the Olympic champion took a 3-0 lead in the first set and then won 6-3 with her seventh ace.

In the second set, Zheng took the first three games and appeared to be heading for a dominant victory. However, Krejcikova surpassed the 22-year-old with four consecutive wins.
