Sydney Burger opens in West Hempstead

Sydney Burger looks like one of the many halal burger joints dotting the streets of Nassau County, the heart of the late-night dining scene. But something different is happening here.

A painting on the wall shows a 15-foot burger with a fried egg, bacon, pineapple rings and a red topping that almost resembles sliced beets. This is what burgers look like on the other side of the world, in Australia.

Beets are a beloved but controversial burger ingredient in Australia, which is why you won’t see them on Sydney Burger’s menu. The signature smash burger ($14.49) is a small ground beef patty covered in three layers of melted cheese that masks flavor and house-roasted tomatoes. The most iconic ingredient is the perfectly rounded fried egg. There’s no ketchup in sight, although caramelised onions (a classic Australian ingredient) add sweetness. Overall a nice hybrid between the Australian giants and the smaller old school American burgers.

Owner Sydney Gouda was born on the South Pacific island of Fiji but grew up in Brisbane, Australia. He worked as a sous chef at the now-closed 21 Club in Manhattan. Sydney Burger opened its first restaurant in West Hempstead; Gouda has already followed this with a Brooklyn chicken joint, Birdies Hot Chicken.

The restaurant also serves other Australian products, such as chilli sauce (chili sauce), chicken salt (for fries), Australian ginger beer and beef bacon jam. Gouda offers burger specialties containing venison and kangaroo meat, available from its distributor. She also bakes her own pie, which she uses for her Aussie meat pie.

The regular menu is full of mashups like the croissant smashburger, bolognese fries, and an ice cream sandwich tucked into a brioche. The spicy chicken sandwich ($9.49) also includes a smaller but perfectly cooked nugget of chile-spiced chicken breast. But the best thing might be the cheesy fries ($7.49) dipped in flour-laden nacho cheese sauce. They are so decadent and delicious that they demand to be finished.

Sidney Burger, 149 Nassau Boulevard, West Hempstead, 631-888-3797, sydneyburgernyc.com. Open every day from 11 am to midnight.
